What's Happening in Room 209?

Friday, September 28, 2007
 Dear Parents,
It is hard to believe but we say goodbye to September on Sunday. The days have flown as we journey through this first grade year. We have accomplished many tasks this week. Among them:
-charting the words that have the sound of a, as in apple,
-charting the sound of sh, as in shoe,
- introducing the spelling words and playing concentration with them,
-singing and chanting the spellings of the new words,
-starting our Nursery Rhyme unit and partner reading the rhymes with our friends,
-making sheep as a response to the rhyme of Mary Had A Little Lamb,
-continuing our work as scientists by observing and making notes about our adopted tree in the playground,
-listening for rhymes after reading Is Your Mama a Llama?,
-sharing insights into the story (above) with our Making Meaning partner, and
-using a nursery rhyme to identify the beginning, middle and end of a story.

Another Great Website

Hello to everyone!

I recently found a fantastic website entitled Building Blocks for a Healthy Future. This website is a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and it is devoted to the promotion of safe and healthy habits for young children. There are areas for both parents and children, along with suggested activities.

Here at Todd Hall we have prekindergarten classes through second grade- I feel it is such a privilege to work with younger children! It is the perfect time to help them develop healthy and effective skills that will last a lifetime. The Building Blocks for a Healthy Future offers great strategies to help support our children as they learn important social skills and decision-making strategies. Please click here to learn more!

Dear Parents,
This has been a short but busy week in room 209! It was great to meet you at Open House and share the goals we have for your children. Here are a few of the activities we  engaged in this week.
In reading, we began using our blue reading folder. The children are getting accustomed to bringing the folder and book back and forth to school each day. Parents, please have the children read to you and mark how many minutes on the reading log. We would like to see them reading 70 minutes a week.
In Math, the children have had many games and activities focusing on tallies, and skip counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. We tallied our favorite pets and it seems that dogs rule!
In Science, we began talking about what a scientist does. Through this conversation and with the help of a little book on scientists, we discovered that we are all scientists if we look, listen, measure, take notes, and make pictures. We have started to use our green folders for science.
