Five Senses

Dear Parents,

As you can tell from our posted photos, we all had a wonderful time at the Lincolnwood Fire House. Both boys and girls alike were impressed by the huge engines, noisy sirens, flashing lights and dedicated firefighters. It was a perfect display of how each of our FIVE SENSES helps us learn about our surroundings, and, in this case, stay safe. The firemen (unfortunately, there are no female firefighters in Lincolnwood...yet) are truly interested in teaching the young residents how to react to any fire emergency. They patiently put on all of their equipment in front of us so that the children could see that the friendly firefighter is underneath all of the sometimes frightening apparel.

The repeated mantra was "go to the firefighter if he enters your house to save you. Do NOT run away or hide from him." These are all discussions that should be continued at home.

Arachnids, Bugs, Insects

May 16, 2008

We had much more time this week to appropriately tend to our topic, INSECTS. Because all of the children, both boys and girls alike, are fascinated by these creepy crawlies, we were delighted to examine them more closely. Since bugs can be found most everywhere, we were able to examine some first hand, and go beyond book learning alone. Yes, we even have an occasional visitor in the form of an ant...our juice leftovers can be very sticky! Don't be alarmed. This just affords us a "teachable moment" regarding cleanliness.

So what did we learn about insects? Here are a few of our discussion topics:

INSECTS have three body parts (head, THORAX, abdomen) and six legs.

Spiders don't measure up. They have only two body parts and eight legs, hence their classification as ARACHNIDS.

ANTENNAE do most of the seeing, hearing, feeling and touching for bugs (catchall category)

Happy Mothers Day

Happy Belated Mothers Day to all of our wondereful mommies.  You are the best!   Your children were so excited about honoring you at our singing show.  Thanks to all for the great attendance.  Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, especially the performers!  Our week flew by as we "rehearsed, " walked to the green house, wrapped our purchases and put together our card for Mom.  Needless to say, little time was left to concentrate on our topic INSECTS, so we will repeat it this week.  Those of you attending the show may have noticed our LARVA container.  We are anxiously OBSERVING them as they eat, fatten up and spin their COOCOONS.  Certainly before the year ends they will have METAMORPHOSIZED into beautiful butterflies that we can free in our field.   We will keep you posted.

IMPORTANT NEWS/DATES:

May 19th- Firehouse field trip.  All are welcome to walk along with us.

Don Freeman, Author Study

May 3, 2008

Dear Parents,

Our AUTHOR study went over surprisingly well.  After talking about POETS writing POETRY and ILLUSTRATORS drawing the pictures for books and POLICEMEN keeping us safe and DENTISTS cleaning our teeth, etc. we eventually comprehended that authors have a very specific job too.   And so we introduced the name, DON FREEMAN.  Mr. Freeman is no longer alive, but if he were, he would be 100 years old this year.  After singing happy birthday to him (we sing happy birthday to anybody and anything…one of our favorite things to do!), we learned that he became an author only after he lost his trumpet on a New York train.  When his musical ambitions were dashed her successfully turned to authoring children’s books.

Roses are Red, Violets are Blue,
We’re learning to RHYME, How about you?

Our Great Big World

April 19, 2008

Toda Raba (Hebrew), Shukria (Urdu), Efharista (Greek), Basimata (Assyrian) are just a few of the ways we recited "thank you" this week. And a great big thank you for the wonderful participation from home. We were able to share each other's language by repeating simple basic words, admire each others native garb worn by the children, and sample some very delicisioso dishes prepared by our culturally diverse classmates...all due to the time and energy of moms and dads at home. Your support and cooperation for what we do enriches your child's school environment tenfold. Gracias.

Because we had so many props and prompts from home, we were able to extend the reach of our multicultural books and display visual prompts for our weekly activities.

Save Mother Earth

April 11, 2008

The first thing we learned this week is that there's "no place like home." In this case we're referring to our home, planet Earth. If we use up all of our water or pollute our air, there is no other planet that can substutute as a new HABITAT. We learned last week, during our study of the SOLAR SYSTEM, that none of the other planets can furnish us with the necessities of life. Our goal became---- "save MOTHER EARTH!" Our following discussions included ways to do just that.

outer space

Dear Parents,
We’ve arrived safely back at EARTH, after our weeklong journey into OUTER SPACE.  Space and the sea are two frontiers that are still to be explored and our young children are the very ones to do the future exploration… so why not get a jump on things and start learning about the wide unknown.  Of course, we couldn’t touch and feel the elements of space, but the sky is a vast expanse, free for the viewing.  We encouraged everyone to gaze into the night sky and see what the moon looked like.  After all, the MOON does change shape nightly, depending on how much SUNLIGHT it reflects.  They learned that the moon phases have special names.  Our favorites are CRESCENT MOON (or fingernail) and FULL MOON.

Welcome to Opposties Week

Feb. 29, 2008
Sorry we missed adding to our blog site last week.  We were occupied with preparing a Pre-K presentation for the school board and incoming families, 2008-09.  Ms. Jude, the photographer, Ms. S., the technician, and myself, the narrator, are proud of our finished product.  It will be posted on the blog site AFTER the board presentation, March 3rd.  Please check it out on our site.  You will see your little ones in action and all will become clearer to you.  Yes, we learn best through play and play is our specialty!
