Week ending 12/14/07

This week has been busy. The first graders read Teacher’s Pet.  It was about a class that brought their pets to school.  Please have your child read the story summary to you.  The word wall words this week were: her, who, and joke.  I chose joke because the boys and girls  are starting to learn about magic e that tells the vowel to say its name.

The second graders read My Grandma.  It is about a grandmother who is different than most other grandmothers.  Our word wall words this week were: goes, doesn’t and caught. We talked about many words that have a silent gh.  We also began learning about syllables. The students now know that every syllable has a vowel.  When the students are trying to sound out long words, they can “chunk it” and sound out each part.  In class they practiced reading words with more than one syllables.  Here is a great site to practice syllables.
