First Week
Dear Parents,
Our classroom is off to a great start for this school year! The children are happy to be here and eager to learn each day. Some have even said that they look forward to getting homework! I enjoyed learning about the children this week and listening to their stories about their summer fun!
During this week, the children spent time learning about school expectations and first grade routines. Our district is implementing a new program PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports). I have sent information with the students each evening for you about this program. You will also have an opportunity on Curriculum Night to learn more about PBIS during Miss McElligatt's presentation.
I read aloud each day to students this week. On the first day of school, we read the book, First Grade Jitters. We discussed how some of the children felt about starting first grade. This was a great opportunity for students to discuss their feelings and recognize that other children might have similary. On Wednesday, we read the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. After reading this story, the children created our first classroom book by drawing pictures beginning with different letters. We then read two great books on Thursday: Mr. Brown Can Moo, by Dr. Seuss and First Day Jitters, by Julie Dannenberg. The children enjoyed books very much. They loved listening to the rhymes and silly story written by Dr. Seuss, and created a bulletin board of things a first grader can do outside our classroom. Our class also loved Julie Dannenberg’s book because they learned that even adults might have first day jitters! Finally, we read I Like Me on Friday and did two projects that helped make the children feel that they are special.
Reading aloud is important way to promote literacy and a love of reading. Please check out the Literacy Connections web site to learn why reading aloud to your child at home is so important.
We also began our University of Chicago program this week. We reviewed some kindergarten math concepts by using a number line, practicing our graphing skills, beginning our calendar routine, and playing some math games. The children seem to love this first math unit! ☺
This week has gone so quickly! I hope that your children have shared with you some of things they have learned. If you should have any questions or concerns, please contact me. I would like to work together with you to make first grade a wonderful experience for your child.
I hope that you and your family enjoy your Labor Day weekend!
Sincerely,
Natalie Nikolic
