TODD HALL BEARS
With perfect weather outdoors, Mrs. Schremser’s first and second graders were off to a great start learning about football.
The first graders learned how to throw and catch a football, and how to kick the football off the tee..
Each child was tested on throwing, catching, and kicking the football off the tee.
At this level basic skills, safety, relays, and low organized games is what first graders were taught during their first football experience at Todd Hall.
The second graders worked on the fundamentals of throwing and catching, while learning how to throw a spiral. They also learned how to punt the football along with kicking the football off the tee.
New vocabulary words offense, defense, receiver, quarterback, and touchdown were introduced to each class.
Each child was tested on throwing, catching, kicking and punting. The second graders will end their unit with advanced low organized games, along with a written quiz.
All these basic football activities and skills also help children with perceptual motor development, attention span, concentration, listening skills, working in cooperative groups and self-control. It also helps children understand cooperative learning at the highest level.
KINDERGARTEN is learning about movement awareness, locomotor movements, and manipulative activities in physical education class.
Movement awareness is a very important area for kindergarten children. They are learning how to:
• Identify general space and how to move through general space by starting and stopping on colors, shapes, and numbers.
• How to move freely in personal space using different directions, levels, pathways and patterns
• Learning how to explore speed at which the body moves fast or slow.
LOCOMOTOR MOVEMENTS are used daily in physical education class. The children have been introduced to the following and have been tested on:
• Running, hopping, sliding, jumping, walking, galloping, and skipping.
• Non-locomotor movements: bending, stretching, curling, twisting, turning and swinging.
MANIPULATIVE SKILLS and activities have been also introduced to the children. They are learning different manipulative activities using different objects and equipment. While standing in their personal space each child is learning how to toss and catch.
