News from Mrs. Govostis' Class

Nursery rhymes were a hot topic this week. Though this is a topic that might sound trivial for sophisticated first graders like us, they serve a definite purpose. They are loaded with lessons in phonics, story elements, and sequencing. Our core book, Each Peach, Pear, Plum, contains a variety of nursery rhymes that are based on the I Spy theme.

Miss Max also read us Goldie Locks has Chicken Pox, an enjoyable book that helped us with making connections, an effective strategy for comprehension.

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein was a highlight of the week. A thoughtful story about an unselfish tree deriving happiness by giving everything she could to make a boy happy was touching and prompted a wonderful discussion. How many of us can be that unselfish!

We have just begun Unit 2 and working on Math Boxes. Math Boxes are included with every new workbook lesson and are reinforcement activities of the previous day’s lessons.

Our Celebrity of the Week was Areni. Areni told us that she loves to eat steak, play soccer, and read and write. Her favorite animal is a giraffe. When she grows up, Areni wants to go to Paris and visit the Palace of Versailles. We would like to thank Areni for making our showcase window so beautiful.

Our Celebrity last week was Andrew. Andrew told us that his favorite sport is baseball, his favorite food is pizza, and that he loves visiting his grandmother. His dream is that someday he will be able to go to a Bears’ game. We hope that dream comes true Andrew!

Enjoy your last “summer-like” weekend, everyone. Fall is around the corner!
