Dear Parents,
Our second week together has been a successful one. Your children have come to first grade with a wonderful variety of skills, talents and background knowledge. Everyone loves to participate, and have a lot to say! We have been talking about ourselves, learning how we are all special in different ways, and planning a few surprises for Curriculum Night on Sept. 9th, starting promptly at 6:30 P.M. We started spelling and phonics this week. We are concentrating on sight words, our names, and upper and lower case letters.
We will be starting Reading Workshop next week. The letter coming home on Monday, in the blue Reading Folder, describes the program in detail. If you have any questions, please let me know. The children will be learning a variety of reading strategies they can use to help them read. Please remember to leave the Reading Log in the Reading Folder all week. It is collected on the following Monday, and you will get a new one for the current week. The Reading Folder and the Home Folder come to school every day.     Â
In math, we are using white board slates to practice writing numbers while answering questions and reviewing how to tally. The children practiced tallying with alphabet letters, and we made a graph tallying our pets at home. We played the Tally/Dice Roll game, and the Penny-Die game, and they were able to use numbers in different ways. Ask your child how to play Top-It. You can use a regular deck of cards using only the cards with numbers. Each player turns over a card, reads the number, and the player with the larger number keeps both cards. We continued learning about graphs, and made a September calendar.
During science, we had a lively discussion on what science is all about, and what scientists do. The children drew their version of a scientist at work.
***See you next Tuesday, 9/9/08, at 6:30 P.M. for Curriculum Night!
(Remember this is for parents only.)
IMPORTANT NOTE: In your child’s Home Folder you will find the Parent Handbook. The form on the back must be filled out, signed and returned. Thank you,
Have a super, relaxing weekend!!!!!
Sincerely,
  Â
