Welcome Newsletter

Dear Parents,

We had an excellent first week!  After reading First Grade Jitters, we were all a little more relaxed.  Everyone is excited, eager to learn and enthusiastic to add to our conversations.

During the past week, we spent time on establishing routines, sharing our favorite books, writing in our journals, reviewing colors, and drawing and/or writing about what we want to learn in first grade.  After reading Brown Bear, Brown Bear, we sorted, sequenced and read sentences in small groups.  The children loved doing Reader’s Theater using the book, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.  Everyone had a part and did a wonderful job!  Also, in conjunction with our new District 74 initiative – PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Support), we discussed the importance of having rules at home, at school and when playing a game.  Then the children created a list of classroom rules for room 208, which we all signed.  We also spent time in several areas of the school to discuss and show exactly what behaviors are expected so the children can be respectful, responsible and safe.

In math, we are having fun with our Everyday Mathematics program.  There are numerous “hands on” activities and games, and each child has a workbook.  The children are skip counting by 5s and 10s, sequencing numbers and learning about graphs.  If you make a simple number line from 0 to 20, your child can show you how to play the Number Line Squeeze game.  Also, ask your child about the Penny/Dice game.

***Save the date - Curriculum Night is 9/9/08 - more information to follow.

***Please look in your child’s Home Folder every night, and have them bring it back to school each day.  I have labeled the left side for homework only.  All other papers will be on the right side.

Thanks and have a super weekend!
