Featuring kindergarten kids' news from Ms. Goldman's Class
Dear Families,
The children enjoyed a beautiful and informative "Art on Parade" talk on the artist, M.C. Escher, presented by Mrs. Akiva. After admiring the many examples of his work that she brought, we attempted our own versions of Escher's mathematical prints.
Reading / Writing Workshop
We have been using parts of words to solve new words (by highlighting word parts), changing the last letter of a word to make new words, (by using magnetic letters), and changing the first letter to make new words (by using magnetic letters). Noticing word parts is useful in reading and solving words. Knowing word parts can help readers check reading for accuracy. Children can use parts of words they know to read or write new words.
Science
The children are investigating the soil samples that they brought from their yards. They are using magnifying glasses to search for small animals, sticks, nails, glass, plastic, leaves, seeds, or pine needles.
Math
We are continuing to work with adding the numbers from 5 to 9. We are now learning to subtract these numbers as well. The children are using the Lift the Bowl game to practice these new concepts.
Social Studies
The question this week was "How are earth materials used?" This related to our Earth Day celebration and stimulated our discussion in which we talked about what people are doing to the earth. We do not want to hurt our earth, so we have to make sure we use the earth materials in order that they will last.
Ms. Goldman's Corner
Although the weather is getting warmer and fresh air is coming in, the heat is still on in our classroom. On warm days, please dress your child in light weight clothing. No sweatshirts or layering of clothing is necessary. If your child would like, he/she can bring a small, simple water bottle to class to keep above the coat hooks.
P.S. Please help your child learn how to tie his/her shoelaces.
