News from Room 207
Happy Earth Week!  Earth Day was Tuesday, and we spent the week learning how we can care for our earth.  The main focus of our week was the “three R’s”...  recycle, reduce, and reuse.  I hope the information learned in this unit will be carried over to your home.  The children are already off to a good start, as they used trash to make a new treasure.  This is a great way to reuse!!  They loved sharing their projects with our class, and we displayed them in the showcase all week.  Take a look at our Earth kids project hanging in the hallway....

Our language arts time was spent in a study of the earth.  We began the unit with a nonfiction story called Let’s Look After Our World.  We wrote about what we learned and completed an earth kids project that hangs in our hallway.  The children were excited to discover simple, practical ways they can help the earth at home and at school.  Each day this week we worked on our Earth journals.  Each page is about a part of the earth.  We read a fantastic book called The Wump World.  In this story, the gentle creatures (the Wumps) experience complete destruction of their planet because outside creatures invade and pollute their world.  We compared and contrasted the difference, which led to a discussion about how we change our world when we pollute it.  We did a fun project with this story, too.   We also loved Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax.  This is a book about nature, too, but it is about destroying trees.  We read A River Runs Wild and identified important story elements.  Finally.... we ended our earth unit today by completing an earth project and summarizing how we can care for our beautiful planet.
Writer’s workshop continues to be a favorite part of our week.  The children are more proficient as writers and are working hard to “publish” stories for our classroom.  At this time, we are writing expert stories (nonfiction) and personal narratives.  We will have an Author’s Tea in May to celebrate and share our hard work!   Look for dates and times soon!!!!
Finally, we are learning SO much in math!  We began math unit nine on place value and fractions.  We counted by 1s and 10s on number grids to prepare the way for adding and subtracting.  The children practiced adding and subtracting 10s using the number grid.  They investigated number-grid patterns to reinforce counting, adding, and subtracting with 10s and 1s.  Today we completed a fraction pizza project.  Not only was this fun, but the children learned about equivalent fractions!

Important Reminders...
Your child’s bird research is due on Monday. :)

Have a terrific weekend with your family!
