Dear Parents,
Here are the top ten things we did this week:
1. We began our study of birds and chose the bird we would use in our report. We began a web in school that will be finished at home. The completed web is due in school on April 21st. We will then write our report in school.
2. The kick-off for Earth Week began with our Trash to Treasure project! The children went home with a flyer outlining the project which has the students using old items to make a new object. For those parents who are looking for an idea of what to construct with their child, try out www.kaboose.com . There you will find a wealth of ideas showing one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
3. In Making Meaning, we read “Raptors”. This non-fiction book helps the children to use their visualizing strategy to make sense of the text. They also use their wondering /questioning to help them understand the story.
4. We discussed the attributes of birds and filled out a response sheet showing what we remembered about bird characteristics.
5. In Math, we reviewed doubles, near doubles and sums for 10. We also reviewed fractions as equal parts of a whole and went as far as 6ths. “Sharing Pennies” was an activity designed to find fractional parts of collections. There were no timed tests this week.
6. Our rainforest man, Dino, was here again this year to share stories about this habitat for many animals. The children were so excited and thrilled to see the variety of snakes, crocodiles, and turtles. But the snakes (not poisonous) held by 4 brave teachers (I was not one of them!) were the biggest hit. Thank you for your donations to the Rainforest Foundation. Through this, the children feel that they are playing their part in saving the rainforest.
7. Wednesday, April 9th was a fabulous night for parents and children coming to Portfolio Night. It was so nice to be with you and share in our pride for the children’s hard work.
8. Next week the children will be making bird nests. Please use a gallon
zip lock bag and collect thin twigs (about 6 inches long) and a few dry leaves for
our project.
9. Our Star of the Showcase was Briyana. She shared a large collection of toys and
action puppets that really caught our attention. Thanks, Briyana!
10. Next week we will go to the play, “Seussical” on Thursday, April 17. We will
leave at 9:00 A.M. and return at 12:00 noon. It promises to be an exciting
morning.
Have a wonderful weekend.
