What's Happening in room 209?

Sunday, April 6, 2008

Dear Parents,
Here are the top ten things we did this week.
1.    Can you believe we are now starting the fourth quarter?  The time slips by so quickly!
2.    We began the week by celebrating two birthdays, those of Kyle Avenir and Matthew Dume. Happy birthday, boys and may you have an exciting year to come!
3.    Our class gave Mrs. Schremser a memory book of drawings from the Gym show.  We love her and all the creative things she does for us in gym.
4.    The first week back was our wrap-up for the rainforest unit. We reviewed key concepts such as the layers of the rainforest and the reasons that we need to save the rainforest. We did a brief  assessment of the material and the children did very well in their responses.
5.     We wrote paragraphs on two rainforest animals this week: the toucan and the sloth. The children are beginning to use interesting vocabulary in their paragraphs and they love to read their paragraphs to their classmates.
6.    In spelling we began a multiple week study of words with blends (such as the 2 beginning letters in blend) and digraphs (such as the sounds of ch, th, wh, and sh) . I use the words blends and digraphs with the children so that they will know and use the correct terms for these types of words.
7.    In phonics, we practiced the “ look, say, cover and write” method of learning to spell new words.  This is a helpful and fun way of practicing words that we need to be able to print in our everyday work (journals, writing, reader’s responses, etc.)
8.    In math, we have been doing a lot of practice with counting money, even up to and beyond a dollar. (See aplusmath.com for fun games in coin counting!) We have also begun the study of fractions and what it means to have equal parts of a whole. You can practice this at home by cutting up granola bars, pizzas, or any items that will lend themselves to the study of fractions.  Thank you to the children who brought in items from home to demonstrate to the class ½ and ¼  of a whole.
9.    The Star of the Week was Kyle who brought in a lovely array of books, photographs and toys that tell about the things he likes. Thanks for sharing with us, Kyle!
10.    Wednesday, April 9th is Portfolio Night. Parents will be coming with their child at 6:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M.  We can’t wait to see you and share our portfolios!
*****  Reminders***
1.    I will send home a reminder of your time for portfolio night.
2.    Wednesday evening is a night for celebrating your child’s accomplishments. You may see some pages with misspellings, some incorrect math pages and some mistakes. Don’t worry about these. Your child is growing in so many ways and they will want to continue growing and learning if they hear our positive and complimentary words.
3.    Have a great week.
All the best,
Maureen Nelson
