Welcome to the Todd Hall Library!

Monarch Voting Begins!

The Monarch Book Awards are a State of Illinois book award organized through ISLMA, the Illinois School Library Media Association. What makes them unique is that Illinois kindergarten, first and second grade students act as the judges, and their votes determine which book wins the title. Last year's winner, Once Upon a Cool Motorcycle Dude by Kevin O'Malley, was the runaway winner and was insanely popular with all the kids. This year the playing field is a little more level; it's difficult for Mrs. Nilapant and I to guess which one will win. The early votes are showing a few titles neck-in-neck for the win. I'll announce the Todd Hall winner soon, but the State of Illinois winner will take a few more weeks.

Dial III Preschool Screening and Valentine's Day

This year Dial III Preschool Screening was once again held in the Todd Library, but I got tons of cataloging done, so all in all the day was a success. Valentine's Day falls next weekend, and the kids and I have been enjoying Valentine's Day-themed stories, when we are not voraciously reading Monarch books in anticipation of our school-wide vote in a couple weeks. I shared one of my favorite books with the kids, My Penguin Osbert in Love, and a Todd Hall student favorite, Olive, My Love, starring the dog from the book Olive the Other Reindeer. It was heartwarming to receive valentines from many students on Friday, as well as cookies from a generous family.

Groundhog Day!

February is the month for fake holidays here at Todd Hall. During the shortest month of the year, we celebrate Superbowl, Groundhog Day, Valentine's Day, the 100th Day of School, we hold a Fairy Tale Ball, we celebrate President's Day, and there are probably a few others I'm forgetting. We read Groundhog Day stories this week and had many enlightening conversations both about shadows, what a groundhog is, exactly, and weather prediction. Many of the kids had never heard of a groundhog, or thought it was a beaver. I told them that human weather prediction is not all that much more accurate than groundhog weather prediction, and we enjoyed learning about the changing of the seasons, even if those changes won't be coming around for months yet.

Monarch Book Awards and New Books!

I devoted this week in the Todd Hall Library to formally introducing the nominees for the Monarch Book Awards, as well as reading as many books as I could from our most recent Follett Book order. One of my favorite Monarch nominees is a compilation of many different Cinderella stories from around the world into one book called Glass Slipper, Gold Sandal, which is sort of an international Cinderella stew which has to be read carefully to keep track of the national origins of the different elements of the tale. I was very touched by the story and the kids were captivated.
