Jobs, Places, and Safety in Our Community

This week, we will be finishing up our unit on communities, through which our students have been learning about jobs, places, and safety rules in our community. We have been reviewing what people do in their jobs and where they work using pictures, reading books on jobs, and writing. The students shared the jobs they would want to do in the future, thinking about the activities they enjoy now and their talents. Our unit also covered opposites. The word "opposite" was new for many of our students, but most of them were very familiar with the concept of opposites. We learned and reviewed many opposite pairs that will help our students describe objects and their thoughts more accurately.

Dear Parents,

Happy 2010!

We're so glad to be back here at Todd Hall, and we are getting back into the swing of things after a nice relaxing break and holiday! It sounds like the students loved their time at home with family and friends, esp. getting to sleep in and play outside!  :)

New ELL Parent Center Website!

The ELL Parent Center now has its website up and running!  The Center offers wonderful programs that are tailored to meet your needs!  They are currently offering courses for literacy, parent education, and community resources.  The parent and family literacy classes will help you build your own English proficiency, parent education classes will help you foster a rich learning environment in your home, and the courses on community resources will provide you with information on healthcare and immigration in America.  I highly recommend looking through the website and learning more about the courses offer

Communities

Our new unit on communities is underway, as our student are learning about what a community is and the places and the people that make up a community. By using the community that they are most familiar with, Lincolnwood, the students are using their own experiences to share about the places they have been in this community and what they can do there. Our key vocabulary words for places in our community are bakery, clothing store, fire station, grocery store, library, post office, and restaurant. The students should be familiar with the names and purposes of these places. But it does not stop there~ our students have been thinking of so many places that they know around the community, such the park, movie theater, schools, police station, and more.
