Featuring kindergarten kids' news fromMs. Goldman's Class
Dear Families,
April 22 is Earth Day. We will celebrate by creating books and projects from recycled items. Maybe you can discuss with your child the reason for Earth Day and why we celebrate it.
Reading / Writing Workshop
In our Making Meaning read-out-loud lesson, we read A Letter to Amy and we are writing our own letters to pen pals in another kindergarten class. The lesson teaches us to wonder about a story that was read aloud, to refer to the story to support our ideas, and to share our ideas with one another.
Science
Next week the students will: observe, describe, and sort earth materials based on properties; explore places where earth materials are found and ways that earth materials are used; and compare the ingredients in different soils.
Math
We are working on our math facts. This week the children engaged in an activity called "Lift the Bowl Game" which promotes the understanding of family facts up to nine. You can play the "Hand Game" with your child. Say you are playing family facts of number 5. Show five objects, then have your child look away, put some of the objects in your closed hand and the rest in your open hand. Have your child tell you how many are in your closed hand.
Social Studies
Our social studies question for the week was how weather affects us. We had a great discussion telling how the weather affects us through rain, wind, and snow, and how weather could be harmful and how it could be helpful.
Ms. Goldman's Corner
Please send in soil from your backyard only. Put your child's name on the bag, seal the bag, and have your child bring it to school on Monday morning. We will be conducting a science experiment that relates to our rock unit and to our Earth Day celebration.
