Jobs, Places, and Safety in Our Community

This week, we will be finishing up our unit on communities, through which our students have been learning about jobs, places, and safety rules in our community. We have been reviewing what people do in their jobs and where they work using pictures, reading books on jobs, and writing. The students shared the jobs they would want to do in the future, thinking about the activities they enjoy now and their talents. Our unit also covered opposites. The word "opposite" was new for many of our students, but most of them were very familiar with the concept of opposites. We learned and reviewed many opposite pairs that will help our students describe objects and their thoughts more accurately.

During the past week, we have also been focusing on sentences, learning what makes a complete thought and the important parts of a sentence. In both the students' speaking and writing, we are learning to be clear in our ideas and share complete thoughts. We are practicing saying what we are writing aloud before and during writing to help us write clearly. We saw that it is also helpful to read back what you wrote to check if it makes sense.

Next week, we are beginning our new unit on weather and the seasons. Especially in our constantly changing Chicago weather, I am sure that our students will have many experiences to share that connect to our learning.
