Dear Parents,

I just want to give you an update of what we have been doing in our classes.

The first graders are continuing their study of food. We have talked about seeds and what they will grow into. Soon we will examine seeds together in class. We have learned that we eat different parts of the plants. For example, we now know we are eating the seeds of the plant when we eat corn, and we are eating the stems of a plant when we eat celery. We also started talking about foods that are good for us and we will soon be making shopping lists of these foods. We will also be creating our own food pyramids using pictures from newspapers.

Dear Parents,

I would like to introduce myself. My name is Julie Barad . I am replacing Tracey Uruba while she is on maternity leave. I’m very excited to join Todd Hall Elementary School.
Below you will find what your children have been working on with me.

The first graders have been learning about food. We have discovered where food is grown, how it is picked, and how it gets to the factories or supermarkets. We also have discovered what takes place at the factories. We have talked about shopping at the supermarkets and soon we will talk about the different food groups.

The second graders have been learning about prehistoric life. We learned all about dinosaurs which is very exciting. We now know how dinosaurs and plants became fossils. We are in the process of making a diorama about prehistoric life.

Next week we will be learning about Thanksgiving.

Have a nice weekend.

Dear Parents,

The first graders have just finished their unit on Senses.  They learned when and how they are using their senses.  Journals were sent home today.  Ask your child to see it!

The second graders are in the middle of learning about providing goods and services. Vocabulary words that we are learning about are factory, warehouse, trucks, transport and moving.  Try to discuss these words with your child.

Reminder:  The ELL Center  in Skokie is holding an Open House this Sunday.  Flyers were sent home with all the students.   It is a great opportunity to see  and meet others in your community.

Have a great weekend!

Welcome Parents,

The ELL program is off and running.  The first graders are learning about their senses.  A special poem is being sent home to share with you.  Please sign the poem and return to school for a Todd Ticket.

The second graders are learning about caterpillars and butterflies.  We have read stories and written about them.  Ask your child about it!  Next week we are learning about producing goods.

Have a great weekend!
