May is Better Hearing and Speech Month

3rd Quarter Update

Listening

Listening is a key skill for academic success.  To be a good listener, a child must first attend to the spoken message, then understand the spoken message, and finally remember the message.  Here are some suggestions for listening games to play at home.

1)      Play “Duck, duck goose”.  This game helps children attend to the spoken message as she must be ready to jump up when the word “goose” is spoken.

Language Development for Bilingual or English Language Learners

Many children have a language spoken in the home other than English.  When a child is able to use and understand two languages equally well, he or she is said to be bilingual.  For more information on bilingualism and how it relates to speech and language development, please visit this link.  http://www.asha.org/public/speech/development/BilingualChildren.htm

Second Quarter Updates

It’s hard to believe that the second quarter is already over!  Report cards will be sent home on January 30th.  If your child receives speech and language services, an update on his or her progress in speech will be sent home as well.  Please keep an eye out for your update.

Preschool Screenings

Welcome back!  Preschool screenings will be held at Todd Hall on February 4th and February 5th.  Children who are 3 to 5 years of age may have their speech/language skills, gross and fine motor skills, and knowledge of early school concepts screened.  Please call Todd Hall at 847 675-8235 to schedule an appointment.  Lincolnwood School District, as well as nine other area elementary school districts, is part of the Niles Township District for Special Education (NTDSE) cooperative.  NTDSE sponsors these preschool screenings throughout the year at area elementary school locations.  If you would like your child to be screened, but are unable to attend on February 4th or 5th, please click on the foll

More Winter Practice Ideas

Winter break is almost here.  I hope you and your family enjoy the two-week vacation.  If your child is currently working on his or her speech and/or language skills, here are some ideas for home practice over the break.

Winter Practice Ideas

Happy Holidays! The holiday season brings about many opportunities to develop speech and language skills.  Here are a few suggestions:
  1.  Have your child name as many things he or she can think of that you can do with or in the snow.
  2.  Name items that are cold or winter clothing.

Facilitating Speech & Language Development

How can you help your child with his or her speech and language skills?  The following are some general tips for facilitating speech and language development.
  1. Expand on what your child is saying.  For example if he says, “The dog is barking” you can show your child how he can add more details to his sentence such as “Yes, the dog is barking loudly” or “The dog is barking at the squirrels in the back yard”.
