K ~ Transportation

Transportation

Kindergarteners had a great week learning about different types of transportation. We got a chance to learn a song and make a great flipbook about the different types of vehicles we ride to get to places. Invite your child to read the book to you. Use these questions to discuss the book together: 1) What is one kind of transportation on land? 2) Why do people travel on planes? 3) Which kinds of transportation do we use?

Transportation can be classified into three major groups: land, water, and air. Please invite your child to have these types of discussions with you. These discussions will help your child learn and remember many of the vocabulary words we've learned in class as well as practice using these terms in sentences.

Space

This past week, the second grade students learned about the topic, space. We discussed the planets in our solar system, the moon, and our planet, the Earth. We read books together, watched a video, and even made our own posters and books about the various subtopics mentioned above.

Valentine's Day as well as Presidents Day fell along this week. We made cards for our parents as well as made Abraham Lincoln books. It was an educational and fun filled week.  Please invite your child to discuss the topics touched upon this week.

Kindergarten ELL

For the past three weeks, we have been learning about the following letters: Ll, Hh, and Tt.  Students are learning how to manipulate the sounds to build small words.  Please continually review the sound with your children for continual reinforcement.

K~Review Time

Kindergarteners spent a good portion of last week working on their Alphabet Books. Boy are they starting to look nice. It is no ordinary alphabet book, but it is a reivew book of all the letters, sounds, words, and sentences we will build throughout the year. This will also be a great memory book of all the things the K students learned in Mrs. Lee's class. Ask your children about them.

K~Reading (Mm)

Why are we learning the letters in such a random order, you might ask. Although it seems random, it is a well thought out order to balance consonants and vowels for building small words, and it also helps in learning correct letter formation for writing. Kindergarteners are doing a great job of mastering the letters we learned so far. This week is the letter Mm, so please review this letter with your children. Talk about things that begin with Mm, continually talk about the sound that Mm makes, and practice writing both the uppercase and lowercase form of Mm. Try building some words with the letters we covered so far. Some of our students are getting the concept of blending and are successfully decoding the following words: cod, dad, mom, dog, ad, odd. Please try this at home with your children, it will help them tremendously.

2nd Reading (Syllabication)

2nd grade reading pullout has been focusing on syllabication. It is a complicated process, but once the students crack the code, this will take them a long way. Our students need to work on two areas: 1) mastering the site words 2) knowing how to breakdown the words into syllables to read more challenging words.

This past week they have learned that when there is a vowel/consonant/consonant/vowel pattern in a word, they divide the word into two syllables between the two consonants.

For example:

                                    Closed Syllables

magnet             mag /net                 tennis             ten / nis

   vccv                  vc/cv                     vccv                vc/vc

K~Reading (Gg)

We've been having a great time learning the following letters (c, o, a, d) and this week we will be focusing on Gg.  We've been learning letter recognition, letter sound, letter writing practice, letter-word association as well as learning how to blend the letters together to build short words.  It's very important to learn the letter names/letter sounds, but we need to take it to the next level of building words.  In class we have been building these words together. Some are real words and some are nonsense words: cod, dad, odd, add, doc, cad, and this week we'll add the word dog.  It's been great seeing the visible progress the students are making.

K~Reading (Dd)

It has been very rewarding to observe the K~ELL students absorb the skills we are learning in class. We have learned the letter names, letter sounds, words associated w/ the following letters (c, o, a, d). Our focus this week was the letter Dd. We made Dinosaur Pop-up books and even began blending the consonants/vowels together to make words. This week's popcorn words are it and is. Popcorn words learned thus far are (a, the, it, is). Many kinesthetic games, such as "Fishing For Letters/Words," "Stand on the Letter/Word Mats," and "Memory" games have been played for review. It's been a lot of fun!!

K~Reading (Short a & "the")

Just like this clipart, the K~Reading groups will make alligator puppets to remind them that "a says /a/" in alligator as well as other words (apple, ant, antelope, astronaut, Albert, Andy ...) We will also be reviewing the popcorn word "the". Kindergarteners have learned two popcorn words, a and the, so far. Repetition is key, so as I provide continual reinforcement of these words, letter names and letter sounds, please review these skills at home.

2nd~Reading Magic "e"

All 2nd grade students will be focusing on Magic "e" (silent e) this week. We've done many different exercises, games and internet activities to brush up on the short vowels. Now we are ready to introduce Magic "e".  Rule: When you have a CVC (consonant/vowel/consonant) word such as mat and Magic "e " is added to the end of the word, Magic "e" always skips over the consonant before it and then taps the vowel on its head, and changes the vowel to a long vowel sound such as mate.

mat       + e     =    mate                        sit      + e       =    site
