What's Happening in room 209?

Tuesday, June 11

Dear Parents-

Well, summer vacation has finally begun. It is hard to believe that all this time has passed. We spent our last day of school talking about what we would be doing in the summer and then going over any questions we might have about second grade. The children are actually wise in recognizing the excitement of it all as well as the anxiousness about what second grade might bring.  "Is it going to be hard?" was one of the questions.  We talked about the beginning of first grade math and how the children said, "Oh, I know this. I have done this before." And then we went on to discuss that our lessons will start with what they already know and move on to what they will learn to add to their repertoire of skills.

Dear Parents,
This week was a very exciting one. Our Authors' Tea was so much fun. The children presented readers' theater plays and did an excellent job. On Thursday, the first grade classes from Todd Hall went to Proesel Park for a great picnic. Thanks so much to the moms who handled the games, snacks and thousands of jobs for us. It was a great day and we ALL enjoyed our time together. I hope everyone has a great weekend. Next week, we have five school days. The Monday after that, we have one hour of school. It is amazing that the time is going so fast.
Wishing you all the best,
Maureen Nelson

Dear Parents-
Here are the top ten things we did this week:

1.    We continued with Eric Carle books which the children loved.
2.    After reading The Tiny Seed in review, we matched the parts of a flower to a picture.
3.    We used our sequencing skills to put together a little booklet on the growth of a plant from seed to mature plant.
4.    The sound of “ed” at the end of a word can be heard three ways. We sorted the words which had this ending. It was a challenging task, knowing in which column to put words like ‘played’, ‘melted’ and ‘walked’.
5.    Since we are having some short readers’ theater plays for the authors’ tea, we spent some time rehearsing the plays.
6.    Our A-Z countdown went like this:

Dear Parents-
Here are the top 10 things we did this week.
1.    We enjoyed walking during Monday’s  Walkathon, sponsored by the PTA. What a lovely day to get out and move!
2.    Our A-Z countdown went this way: Monday, green; Tuesday, happy; Wednesday, initials; Thursday, jumping jacks and Friday, design a kite.
3.    We had our district safety drill with the Lincolnwood Police Department on Tuesday.
4.    The children are no longer taking home books from the library, but they will still go to the library on Wednesdays.
5.    The children won an extra free time for their good behavior this week and by the number of compliments they received from other teachers in the hall. Way to go, room 209!

Dear Parents,
Here are the top ten things we did in room 209 this week:

1.    In math, we completed the unit 9 test. It will arrive home this afternoon.
2.    We began our unit on the author of many children’s books, Eric Carle. Today, the children saw a movie about the type of art he does in his books:  collage.  Ask your child about Eric Carle’s favorite book that he has written.
3.    After reading “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” we made and illustrated our own book about “The Very Hungry First Grader”.
4.    We finished reading our bird reports to the class. We are proud of the accomplishments of all our classmates.
5.    On Wednesday, we had our all school study on the country of Korea. There were roving readers, dancers, music, artifacts and delicious snacks.

Dear Parents,

Last week was Earth Week. The children listened to stories about saving our earth. Among them was Wump World by Bill Peet.  The children contrasted what the world was like before and after the "Pollutians" came to earth and started to ruin everything. The students also read "The Lorax" by Dr. Seuss and found out in that touching way of Dr. Seuss' that it takes all of us to guard and nourish the health of our world. Thanks to all the children who brought in and shared their "trash to treasure" projects. What creativity!! Your ideas were very clever.

Dear Parents,
This has been a lovely week with the return of some quite nice weather for the children (and us) to enjoy. Here are the top things we did this week:

1. Wednesday was another opportunity for some parents who were not able to come for portfolio night last Wednesday.  Thank you for coming and thank you for being so encouraging to your children in your comments.

2. In math, we reviewed fractions, money and fact triangles. We completed some of the math boxes in our journals that had not been finished.

3. Also in math, we have been practicing making change to $1.00. This is a difficult concept; please practice with your child at home with make-believe store purchases.

4. The musical, "Seussical" was an exciting treat on Thursday. The children seemed to be captivated by the costumes and exciting dancing and singing.

Dear Parents,
Here are the top ten things we did this week:

1.    We began our study of birds and chose the bird we would use in our report.  We began a web in school that will be finished at home. The completed web is due in school on April 21st. We will then write our report in school.
2.    The kick-off for Earth Week began with our Trash to Treasure project! The children went home with a flyer outlining the project which has the students using old items to make a new object. For those parents who are looking for an idea of what to construct with their child, try out www.kaboose.com . There you will find a wealth of ideas showing one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

Dear Parents,
Here are the top ten things we did this week.
1.    Can you believe we are now starting the fourth quarter?  The time slips by so quickly!
2.    We began the week by celebrating two birthdays, those of Kyle Avenir and Matthew Dume. Happy birthday, boys and may you have an exciting year to come!
3.    Our class gave Mrs. Schremser a memory book of drawings from the Gym show.  We love her and all the creative things she does for us in gym.
4.    The first week back was our wrap-up for the rainforest unit. We reviewed key concepts such as the layers of the rainforest and the reasons that we need to save the rainforest. We did a brief  assessment of the material and the children did very well in their responses.
